In Reincarnation 100 the last boss, the King of Hell, waits at stage 100. He has a hundred reincarnations. Each one you take from him drags you down with him into a new life, and the hundredth ends him. This is the story of that rule, and of the version that came before it.
The first version: a seal
At launch, the King was protected by a seal that broke after a hundred rebirths. Mechanically it was a counter. You reached the bottom of hell, lost to the King, were reborn, and the counter went up by one. The King himself never changed. He was a wall with a health bar, and the real goal was elsewhere.
Moving the hundred onto the King
The fix was to take the number away from the seal and give it to the King. Now every fight against him is complete: four stances that change with his health. When you bring him down, he loses one reincarnation and takes you with him. You are reborn, stronger, and he is waiting with one life less.
The rebirth stops being a failure state. Beating the King and being reborn are the same event. Players who reached the end of the old version keep their progress: older saves count one King life taken per rebirth after the first.
A King who remembers
A boss you fight a hundred times has to change, or the hundredth fight is the first one with bigger numbers. So the King learns. After each fight he guards against what hurt him most: if you won by tapping, he hardens against taps; if your army of past lives did the work, he chains them. He also remembers the path and the blessing you chose, and he tells you so:
“Your past lives wounded me. I have chained them. Fight alone, if you dare.”
That pushes you to change how you play from one life to the next, which is exactly what a game about reincarnation should ask of you.
The army of past lives
The same update gave weight to the lives you already lived. Echoes of your old lives join the fight for a few seconds now and then, and against the King the whole army strikes at once. The more lives behind you, the bigger the army.
